What Is Cupping Massage?

How It Works and What to Expect

If you've heard about cupping but aren't quite sure what it is, you're not alone!

Cupping is a hands-on therapy that can be used alongside massage to help address muscle tension, soreness, and areas that feel tight or restricted. It may look a little different from traditional massage, but it's another way to give your body some extra attention.

At Maine Body Alliance in Portland, Maine, cupping can be incorporated into your massage session based on your body's needs and goals.

What Is Cupping?

Cupping is a technique that uses special cups placed on the skin. The cups create gentle suction, which lifts the skin and the tissue underneath.

Unlike traditional massage, which uses pressure to work into the muscles, cupping uses suction to gently lift the tissue.

The cups can stay in one spot for a short time or be moved across the skin with oil. The approach depends on the area being treated and what feels best for you.

How Does Cupping Work?

The gentle suction from the cups lifts the skin and creates a pulling feeling in the tissue.

Some people find this helps ease the feeling of muscle tightness and makes areas feel more comfortable afterward. Cupping also increases local blood flow to the area where the cups are placed.

It can be especially useful as part of a massage session when working with areas that feel tense or overworked, such as the shoulders, back, hips, and legs.

Cupping isn't meant to be painful, and more suction doesn't mean better results. The goal is to find an approach that works for your body.

What Should You Expect During a Cupping Session?

If you've never tried cupping, here's what you can expect:

  • We'll talk first. We'll discuss what areas are bothering you, what you're hoping to get out of your session, and whether cupping is a good fit.

  • The cups are placed on your skin. You'll feel a gentle pulling or suction sensation.

  • We'll adjust as we go. Communication is important. The suction should feel comfortable, and you can always ask for an adjustment.

  • You may see circular marks afterward. Cupping can leave temporary round marks that look like bruises. These are common and usually fade over several days, sometimes longer. They are not a sign that the treatment worked better.

You don't need to do anything special to prepare. Just come ready to relax and let me know how everything feels.

Is Cupping Right for You?

Cupping may be a helpful addition if you're dealing with muscle tension, soreness, or discomfort in areas like your:

  • Neck and shoulders

  • Upper and lower back

  • Hips and glutes

  • Legs

Cupping isn't right for everyone. Certain skin conditions, circulation problems, bleeding risks, and other health concerns may make it unsuitable. We'll discuss your health history before getting started.
